Effectiveness: Over 99% effective. Less than one woman in 1,000 will get pregnant over three years.

How it works: Small flexible rod to put under the skin of the upper arm. Releases the hormone progestogen. It stops ovulation, thickens cervical mucus to prevent sperm reaching an egg, and thins the lining of the uterus to prevent a fertilised egg implanting.

Advantages: Works for three years but can be taken out sooner. You don’t have to think about contraception for as long as the implant is in place. When the implant is removed your fertility will return to normal.

Disadvantages: Periods may stop, be irregular or last longer. Acne may occur or worsen. It requires a small procedure to fit and remove it.

Comments: Put in using a local anaesthetic and no stitches are needed. Tenderness, bruising and some swelling may occur. You should be able to feel the implant with your finger, but it can’t be seen. Some medicines may stop the implant from working.

Cómo funciona: es pequeña varilla flexible que se inserta debajo de la piel de la parte superior del brazo. Libera la hormona progesterona que detiene la ovulación, espesa la mucosidad cervical para evitar que el esperma llegue al óvulo y adelgaza el revestimiento del útero para evitar que un óvulo fertilizado se implante.

Ventajas: dura tres años pero se puede extraer antes. No tiene que pensar en otra anticoncepción durante el tiempo que el implante está en su lugar. El nivel de fertilidad vuelve a la normalidad cuando se retira el implante.
Desventajas: Los períodos pueden parar, ser irregulares o durar más tiempo. Puede aparecer acné, o empeorar. Se requiere un pequeño procedimiento para insertar y retirar el implante.

Comentarios: Se usa anestésico local y no se necesitan puntos de sutura. Puede haber dolor leve, un hematoma o una leve inflamación que desaparecerán. El implante con el dedo pero no puede ser visto. Algunos medicamentos pueden interaccionar con el implante.
