ERMIAS, OUR FRIEND AND OPTOMETRIST COLLEAGUE/ERMIAS, NUESTRO AMIGO Y COMPAÑERO OPTOMETRISTA

Ermias, our fellow optometrist, has had a life very different from ours.

At the age of 5, while we were playing wars in the hot summers, he knew what real bullets were, simply because their parents were born on the other side of a border drawn by men. He escaped from a war that he did not understand and, with his mother and sister, survived the conditions of the refugee camps. Meanwhile, hundreds of miles away, the prisons were crowded with innocent people, who were killed or released randomly. Luckily his father was one of the fortunate ones who could get out alive. His liberation meant leaving the refugee camp and, thanks to the hard work of their parents, he and his sister could start their education.

Unfortunately Africa not only lives haunted by their wars but also suffers the terror of endemic diseases that insist on tearing homes apart. Still teenagers, Ermias and his sister had to accept the loss of their mother first and their father’s a few years later.

That's when his path crossed with the goodwill of those people who look only to recognize the depth of the human spirit, those people who do not understand about imaginary lines, those who do not need to speak up about God because they know God is in all, people who only speak the language of "wanting to communicate."

Ermias could live and continue his education, becoming a good optometrist. Angel Olaran, although belonging to a different religious belief, offered him a home to live with his sister and granted them financial support for their education.

Ermias is not just a licensed optometrist with an outstanding level of knowledge. At only 22 he is way ahead of us. His manner dealing with patients shows that he is also one of those who look at the depth of the soul. He is like a lotus flower whose roots have suffered the dark mud of injustices, but through hard work and study has been able to transform himself into a delicate, respectful and open hearted being. We foretell good future for him because he is one of those who see and understand the reality as it is.

Ermias, nuestro compañero optometrista, ha tenido una vida muy distinta de la nuestra.

A la edad de 5 años, mientras nosotros jugábamos a las guerras en los calurosos veranos del pueblo, a él le perseguían balas de verdad simplemente porque sus padres habían nacido al otro lado de una frontera dibujada por hombres. Él pudo escapar de una guerra que aun no alcanzaba a comprender  y, junto a su madre y hermana, sobrevivió a las condiciones de los campos de refugiados. Mientras tanto, y cientos de kilómetros más allá, las prisiones se llenaban de inocentes que eran asesinados o liberados según la fortuna, por suerte  su padre fue uno de los favorecidos que pudo salir con vida. Esa liberación significó su salida del campo de refugiados y gracias al duro trabajo de sus padres pudo comenzar su educación. 

Desafortunadamente África no solo vive angustiada por sus guerras. También sufre el terror endémico de una enfermedad que insiste en despedazar hogares. Ermias y su hermana, siendo todavía jóvenes adolescentes, tuvieron que aceptar la pérdida de su madre primero y la de su padre unos años después. 

Fue entonces cuando se cruzó en su camino la buena voluntad de esas personas que solo miran para reconocer lo profundo del espíritu humano; esas personas que no entienden de líneas imaginarias, que no hablan de Dios porque saben que está en todos. En fin, personas que solo hablan con el lenguaje del “querer comunicarse”.

Y así fue como Ermias pudo vivir, seguir con su educación y convertirse en un buen optometrista.  Angel Olaran, aun originario de otro lugar y perteneciendo a una orden con distinta religión, les ofreció un hogar y apoyo económico para seguir estudiando.

Ermias no es solo un óptico licenciado con un nivel sobresaliente en conocimiento. Con tan solo 22 años ya nos lleva mucha ventaja. Su trato con los pacientes muestra que él también es de los que miran directamente al alma. Una flor de loto cuyas raíces han sufrido el lado oscuro de las injusticias pero que a través del esfuerzo y el estudio se ha sabido transformar en un ser delicado, respetuoso, y de corazón abierto. Le espera un buen futuro porque es de los que ven y entienden la realidad tal y como es.
