This
program is community based, that is to say, children live as a family within the
community, which is heavily involved in their care. The program does not
involve adoptions, placement in institutions or foster care. There are 743 orphans
involved who live in Wukro and in villages around Wukro.
-Economical support:
The
majority of children live with relatives but 95 children live alone. In these
cases the elder child is the head of the household. 12 salaried “support
mothers” supervise them by going each day twice to their houses to make sure
that they are healthy, eating properly and attending school. If the head of the
family is older than 15 years old they are encouraged to cook. If he/she
is under 15 years old they have an assigned cook. 14 children have
assigned cooks.
Every
month they receive the assigned economical support (at present it is 395 birr- £13.44-
per child per month) and every year each child is given clothes and bed linen.
-Medical support:
If
a child is sick the medical expenses are covered. At present 47 children are
HIV +. These children receive medical support and an additional extra help for
their nutrition.
-Educational support:
It
covers school material and uniforms but also offers tutorial support classes
(after school) and a multipurpose centre to be used as a library, study place
or for recreational purposes.
The
program covers basic education, pre-university and university studies or a
vocational training. This year there are 26 pre-uni students. 23 out of 27
pre-uni students from last year have accessed studies at University and the
remaining 4 are doing a vocational training. 55 students from last year remain
at Uni. One of the students is in the 5th year at Medical School.
-Psychosocial support:
A
child should grow in 4 aspects: physically, emotionally, intellectually and
socially. This program enables children to improve their behaviour, reduces
their school absenteeism and provides them with the tools and life skills to
express their ideas and feelings, developing their personalities through
helping others and helping the environment.
At
present there are 5 social workers that visit the houses (at least one visit
per household per month) and there are different clubs: literature, theatre,
sports, environment, anti-AIDS ... to help them develop as individuals and in
the community. Some orphans help visiting the elderly -help wash them and
clean their houses-, others help cleaning streets, making compost...
-Community support:
Courses
are organised for parents, relatives, teachers, headmasters and neighbours. The
community might not be able to help economically but they certainly can help
children at other levels.
