PROGRAM FOR THE ELDERLY AND MENTALLY ILL/ PROGRAMA PARA LOS ANCIANOS Y PERSONAS CON DISCAPACIDAD PSIQUICA.

The programme involves 214 elderly people who receive:

Economical support: monthly economical support for their shelter and care.

Feeding support: 45 of them are unable to cook at home so they attend the feeding centre three times/day

Medical support: the service buys them the medication when they need it.

               

Assistential support: Voluntary orphans help them with their personal hygiene and clean their houses for them.

Hay 214 personas de edad avanzada en el programa que reciben:

Apoyo económico: mensual para su mantenimiento y alquiler.

Apoyo alimentario: 45 de ellos no pueden cocinar en sus casas y asisten al comedor social tres veces / día

Apoyo médico: cuidados médicos y gastos de medicación.

Los embarazos no deseados empujan a las mujeres a un plan de vida diferente. La planificación familiar autoriza a la mujer y le da fuerza. BREASTFEEDING/ LACTANCIA MATERNA

Effectiveness: very effective but needs to be used with caution. Can only be used if the woman is breastfeeding often, day and night, and giving no other food or liquids plus the baby is less than 6 months old, and the monthly bleeding has not returned.

How it works: prevents the release of the egg.

Advantages: no side effects.

Disadvantages: cannot be used if the baby is  more than 6 months old, if the woman has had any periods or if she is not only breastfeeding (this means, if she is also giving any other food or liquids- including water- to the baby)

Comments: Very effective for 6 months if fully or nearly fully breastfeeding. Have another method ready to start at 6 months or before, if monthly bleeding returns or breastfeeding decreases.

Eficacia: Muy eficaz, pero debe usarse con precaución. Sólo se puede utilizar si la mujer está amamantando con frecuencia, día y noche, y sin dar otros alimentos o líquidos. Además el bebé tiene que tener menos de 6 meses de edad y la mujer no debe haber tenido ningún periodo.

Cómo funciona: impide la liberación del óvulo.

Ventajas: no tiene efectos secundarios.

Desventajas: no se puede utilizar si el bebé tiene más 6 meses de edad, si la mujer ha tenido algún período o no está dando pecho sólo (es decir, si también está dando cualquier otro alimento o líquido, incluyendo agua, para el bebé)

Comentarios: e muy eficaz durante 6 meses si la lactancia materna es completa o casi completa. La mujer debe utilizar otro método anticonceptivo a los 6 meses o antes, o si empieza a tener periodos o reduce las tomas.

 

FIGHTING MODERATE MALNUTRITION/LUCHANDO CONTRA LA DESNUTRICION MODERADA

There are 800 children involved in this program, 400 from Wukro and another 400 from two surrounding villages.

This program deals with children whose weight is 60-80% of their expected weight. Height is also taken into consideration. When there is severe malnutrition (<60% of their expected weight) they are assisted by UNICEF.

Children stay in the programme for about 3 months, which is usually the time that takes for them to gain their normal weight. They receive a dry portion once/week and their mothers are taught about hygiene, nutrition and the monitoring of the health status of their children

This programme in particular is run in collaboration with the health centre and supported by an NGO.

Hay 800 niños en este programa, 400 de Wukro y otros 400 de dos pueblos de los alrededores.

El programa se ocupa de los niños cuyo peso es del 60-80% de su peso esperado. La altura también se tiene en consideración en las tablas de crecimiento. Cuando hay una desnutrición severa (<60% del peso esperado) los niños son asistidos por UNICEF.

Los niños estan en el programa durante aproximadamente 3 meses, que suele ser el tiempo que necesitan, en general, para recuperar su peso normal. Se entrega una papilla seca a sus madres una vez por semana y se les aconseja cómo prepararla, se les da información sobre higiene y nutrición en general y se les enseña como supervisar el estado de salud de sus hijos.

INTRAUTERINE SYSTEM (IUS) MIRENA/ SISTEMA INTRAUTERINO MIRENA

Effectiveness: over 99% effective. Less than one woman in 100 will get pregnant over five years.

How it works: a small plastic device which releases the hormone progestogen is put into the womb. This thickens the cervical mucus to prevent the sperm from reaching an egg, thins the lining of the womb to prevent an egg implanting and may stop ovulation.

Advantages: works for five years but can be taken out anytime. Periods will be much lighter, shorter and usually less painful. You don’t have to think about contraception for as long as the IUS is in place. When the IUS is removed your normal level of fertility will return.

Disadvantages: irregular bleeding or spotting is common. Periods may stop altogether. Some women report having mood changes, spotty skin and breast tenderness. Very small chance of getting an infection during the first three weeks after the insertion. May get ovarian cysts.

Comments: if fitted after 45 can stay in place until the menopause. Women are taught to check the IUS is in place. Very useful for women with very heavy and/or painful periods. A check for any existing infection is usually advised before and IUS is put in. Not affected by other medicines.

Ventajas: Dura cinco años pero se puede extraer en cualquier momento. Los períodos pueden ser menos abundantes, más cortos y por lo general menos dolorosos. No tiene que pensar en la anticoncepción durante el tiempo que esté en su lugar. El nivel de fertilidad vuelve a la normalidad una vez se extrae el dispositivo.

Desventajas: el sangrado irregular o manchado es común. Los períodos pueden desaparecer por completo. Algunas mujeres tienen cambios de humor, manchas en la piel y sensibilidad en los senos.
