Contraception is the best-kept secret in HIV prevention. Women with HIV who have unintended pregnancies run the risk of transmitting the virus to their children. Preventing unwanted pregnancies among HIV-positive women reduces the number of HIV-positive births and is three times more effective as a prevention strategy than providing antiretroviral treatment to mothers during pregnancy, birth, and breastfeeding.

Condoms are the only contraceptive method which prevents both an unwanted pregnancy and also HIV transmission (and other sexual transmitted diseases).

La anticoncepción es el secreto mejor guardado en la prevención del VIH. Las mujeres con VIH que tienen embarazos no deseados corren el riesgo de transmitir el virus a sus hijos. La prevención de estos embarazos reduce el número de nacimientos de niños infectados con VIH y es tres veces más efectiva como estrategia de prevención que el administrar tratamiento antirretroviral a estas mujeres durante el embarazo, parto y lactancia materna. 

El preservativo es el único método anticonceptivo que previene un embarazo no deseado y protege contra la infección por el VIH (y otras enfermedades de transmisión sexual).
