CROSSING THE BORDER/CRUZANDO LA FRONTERA

Your luggage on top, ours at the bottom

London- Addis Abeba
The flight was perfect including our little intervention at 3:30 am when, suddenly, in the middle of our sleep, we hear: “Attention please. If there is a doctor on board, please contact the cabin crew”. Duty calls. The air hostess, staring at us in our backpacker look, smiled and said: “are you two really doctors?”. With an even bigger smile we said we were. They were surprised by our professionalism with the patient and were extra kind with us thenceforth. Another satisfied customer!

Addis Abeba
At Customs, Addis Ababa Airport, 26/07/12
Goodness me! Problems, problems and more problems. We were stuck in Customs for about 6 hours. They did not allow us to cross the border with the medication despite the letter from the Ethiopian embassy. We had to open the boxes a few times. More than 10 custom officers read the letter and were amazed by the fact it came from the Ethiopian embassy, but rules are rules. We tried everything: British politeness, female charm, Basque humour, Catalan negotiating powers… but at last the old Spanish fury triumphed. Thanks to this and some good souls we were able to leave the office with all our boxes. Obviously we lost our connection flight but we were able to catch another one in the afternoon with a very little extra expense to cover administration fees.

Arriving in Mekele
How exciting!! Angel Olaran (Abba Melaku) has come in person to pick us up. We are going to Wukro.

With Dr Mehari, Angel Olaran, Sister Hadera and Sister Atsede at Wukro Hospital, 27/07/2012

Londres- Addis Abeba

Llegamos a Mekele.
